Eugene Francis West, 90, of Belvidere passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 30, 2024. He was born on November 7, 1933, in Verona, IL. The son of the late, Ivan Otto and Vera (Bedeker) West. He graduated from Belvidere High School and then served our country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a truck driver with Dean Foods for 29 years. His marriage to Donna Nemec on October 6, 1994 in Branson Missouri, was the beginning of many wonderful and memorable years together. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and Moose Lodge of Belvidere. He was also a member of the Flora Grange, Pamona Grange, and enjoyed his involvement with the Boone Co Fair for many years. Gene enjoyed woodworking, word searches, telling stories, farming, and coffee times at Pearl Place. Highlights of his last years were as a guest on the Vets Roll trip, sitting on his donated bench at the Boone Co Fair, a special airplane ride, and most of all the visits and support from his family and special friends. Gene will be remembered by many as a gentle soul, with a great sense of humor, and a willingness to help anyone with anything. He is loved and will be missed by his beloved wife of 29+ years, Donna West; children, Pam (Gary) Hyser, James (Ruby) West, Jack (Lori) West, Jolene (Eddie) Loos, Jay West; Step-children, Randy (Doreen) Nemec, Cindy (Jeff) Molosz, Sherry (Tom) Rhodes; 32 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; brother, Bill (Sally) West; sisters, Sandy Fidder, Diane Wachlin, Judy Gough, Candy Rogers; brother-in-law, Ron Seelhoff; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, previous wives Shirley (Fry) West and Lila (Roe) West; son, Jeffery West; brothers, Jerry West and Ronald West; sisters, Beverly Koppen, Elsie McGrady and J Ellen Seelhoff; grandson, Kevin Bender; granddaughters, Julie and Jill Bender; great-granddaughter Amelia Brickson; stepsons, Terry Pinkston, Jim Pinkston, Rick West, brother-in-laws, David Fidder, Jim Gough. Gene was so appreciative to everyone who cared for him. The family would like to thank Gene’s compassionate care teams at Assisting Hands Home Care and Northern Illinois Hospice. Special thanks to his amazing and devoted caregivers, Boone Co Keen Age Center, Mercy Health at Home, VA, NI Area Agency on Aging, special friends and the neighbors at Pearl Place. There will be a visitation on Thursday, February 8, 2024, from 9:30 A.M. to 11:45 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Belvidere, IL. A funeral service will begin at 12:00 pm. Interment in Belvidere Cemetery, in Belvidere, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to VETS ROLL, Northern Illinois Hospice, or the Belvidere Keen Age Center.
