Gary Appelhans

Gary Joseph Appelhans, 72, of Poplar Grove, IL passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. He was born on October 25, 1951, in Chicago, IL to the late Joseph and Fay (Hamachek) Appelhans. He married the love of his life, Barbara Franz, on March 15, 1991, in Jamaica. Gary grew up in Carpentersville, IL before calling Candlewick Lake home for 29 years. The eldest of five boys, he was looked up to by all his younger brothers. He was owner/operator of Appelhans Trucking for over 35 years. He took great pride in his work and kept his Mac truck running and looking good. Whether it was on the Fox Chain or Candlewick Lake, he enjoyed boating with many friends and family. Although he was a “stepfather”, he could always be counted on to “step up” in every way to support his stepchildren. He enjoyed showing his ’55 Chevy at any antique car event, where he won many trophies. A few of Gary’s favorite sayings – “Ho de do”, “By cracky”, and “maaa”. Gary was loved by his entire family. He was a very kind and generous soul that will be missed by many. He is survived by his beloved wife, Barb; son, Ryan Foster; daughter, Dee (Chris) Frankowski; grandchildren, Seth Frankowski, Nathan Frankowski; brothers, Randy (Maria) Appelhans, Darryl (Lori) Appelhans, Brett (Lisa) Appelhans, Dru (Billie) Appelhans. He was preceded in death by his parents. There will be a celebration of life on Saturday, November 25, 2023, from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. at Candlewick Lake Recreation Center, 1812 Candlewick Dr. SW in Poplar Grove, IL. Memorials can be made to the family in Gary’s name.
