June Smith Obituary

June Carroll Smith, 85, of Caledonia, IL, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2024, at Trustwell Living at Cherryvale Place in Rockford, IL, surrounded by her loving family. Born on December 16, 1938, in Olaton, Kentucky, June was the fourth of eight children born to Wavy Keith (1909-1968) and Ethel Basham (1912-2006). In 1954, the family relocated to Whiting, Indiana, where June continued her education. A lifelong lover of books, she often recounted how moving from a one-room schoolhouse in rural Kentucky to a larger high school in Whiting felt like a dream. The school library became her sanctuary, and she fondly claimed to have read every book available. June married her first husband, Robert L. Zondor, in 1960 in Whiting, Indiana. Together, they embarked on their journey of building a family and a business. June owned and operated a successful dry cleaning business in Crown Point, Indiana, for over 25 years, actively participating in the Crown Point Chamber of Commerce. On June 14, 1991, June found her true love and soulmate, marrying Thomas Arthur Smith in Kankakee, IL. Their union was a testament to companionship and shared passions. June's many hobbies reflected her creative and industrious nature. She was an avid reader, a skilled woodworker, and enjoyed sewing, quilting, stained glass crafting, puzzles, and fishing. She was also a member of St. James Catholic Church in Belvidere, IL. June’s memory will forever be cherished by her beloved husband, Tom Smith; her children: Ann Hentschel, Bob (Brenda) Zondor Jr., Janet (Joel) Mathews, Linda Zondor, Scott (Kim) Smith, Shannon (Troy) Smith, and Angela (Ben Gilles) Smith-Gilles; her grandchildren: Elliot, Hanna June, Colin, Caitlin, Evan, Michael, Jared, Ryan, Alex, Grant, Carson, Samantha, Riley, Isabelle, and Maya; her great-grandson, Addison; her brother Ronald (Helen) Keith; her sisters Landa (Bill) Baum, and sister-in-law Kay Keith; as well as her brothers-in-law, Larry Nichols and George VanHoutegen. June was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Robert L.
