Les P. “Smiley” Richter Jr., 81, of Belvidere, IL, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, May 18, 2024. He was born October 9, 1942 in Waterloo, Iowa to Lester P. and Charlotte (Stock) Richter Sr. He served our country for 20 years in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He married Gladys Ann Douglas. He managed the restaurant at the Clocktower Hotel in Rockford, IL and managed the restaurant at Carson Valley Casino in Nevada. He was a member of the Belvidere V.F.W. and the American Legion. He was proud to serve on the Belvidere V.F.W. Honor Guard. He enjoyed participating in the Kirkland 4th of July Parade, Vets Roll, Wisconsin Tractor Parades and was in the Clamper Club. He is loved and will be missed by his son, Mike (Cathy) Richter; Daughter, Kim Richter; stepdaughter, Lisa (Dave) Johnson; grandchildren, Heather Johnson, Matt Johnson, Bailey Johnson; great-grandchildren, Riley, Lily, Marley, Kinsley, Matthew, Bella, Natalie, and Adam. Friends, Sharon Dittbener, Elis Spooner of Montana. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester P. and Charlotte (Stock) Richter Sr.; beloved wife, Gladys; grandson, Regis; brother, Dick. There will be a celebration of life on Saturday, June 15, 2024 from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at the Belvidere V.F.W. Post 1461 in Belvidere, IL. The Honor Guard will begin their service at 11:00 A.M.
