It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Roger L. Mitchell, who left this world on April 18, 2026, at the age of 93, surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 6, 1932, in Rockford, Illinois, Roger's journey through life was marked by resilience, dedication, and an enduring love for family and the great outdoors.
Roger was the beloved son of Harvey and Elsie (Stieg) Mitchell. Raised in a close-knit family, he was predeceased by his devoted parents, along with a brother, Robert Mitchell, Sr. and sister, Lucille (Donald) Lindquist. His legacy of love and warmth lives on through his surviving family, which includes his cherished children: Kathie Lake of Park Falls, WI; Tom Mitchell of Belvidere, IL; Gretchen Mitchell of Bloomington, IL; and Becky Loos (Mark) of Belvidere, IL; Wade (Anke) Mitchell of Red Lake, Ontario; mother of his children, Mary Mae Mitchell of Phillips, WI. Roger leaves behind 20 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Linda Mitchell, numerous nieces and nephews and friend Barb Buck and family.
A proud graduate of East High in Rockford, Roger was a loyal ERAB, a testament to his dedication and camaraderie. His passion for team spirit extended beyond school as he remained a steadfast fan of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs, sharing this love for sports with friends and family.
Roger served his country while in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. He bravely fought in the Korean War, participating in the battles of Heartbreak Ridge and Christmas Hill, and was discharged as a Sergeant First Class. His service to his country was a source of immense pride, and he carried the discipline and leadership learned in the military throughout his life.
Following his military service, Roger embarked on a career that reflected his affinity for nature and his entrepreneurial spirit. Initially working with Gus Larson Construction, he later found his true calling in the resort business. Roger and Mary Mae managed Caribou Falls lodge in the Northwest Ontario before purchasing Sandy Beach Lodge on Trout Lake, just outside of Red Lake, Ontario. Under his guidance, the lodge became a cherished destination for those seeking the tranquility and beauty of the Canadian wilderness—a legacy that his son Wade and daughter-in-law Anke continue to uphold.
Roger's love for the outdoors was more than just a hobby; it was a way of life. He found solace and joy in hunting, fishing, and spending quality time with friends who shared his passions. Many of his happiest moments were spent in the company of his two favorite uncles, Pat and Fred Stieg, exploring the woods and lakes, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
As we celebrate Roger’s remarkable life, we remember a man whose heart was as expansive as the landscapes he loved. His legacy is one of love, strength, and an unwavering commitment to those he held dear. Roger L. Mitchell will be deeply missed, yet his spirit will forever inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
A Celebration of his Life to be held at the Belvidere VFW, 1310 W. Lincoln, Belvidere, IL on Friday, April 24 with Military Honors at noon with a celebration until 4pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to Coon Creek Casters in Roger's memory.
